04-24-23 ROCORI School Board Meeting




  1. CALL TO ORDER Bohnsack, Hentges, Hesse, Nierenhausen, Schurman, Thompson

  2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The School Board Chair will lead the school board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

  3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Board action to approve the agenda for the meeting is expected.

  4. CONSENT ITEMS Action is requested on the following items of the consent agenda. Consent agenda items are typically adopted without discussion of the individual items because they are routine or ordinary in action. Any consent agenda item may be removed for further discussion and deliberation by any member of the board.

    1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes from the Regular Board Meeting and Work Session held on April 10, 2023. Recommend approval of the minutes from the meetings.

    2. APPROVAL OF BILLS Treasurer Nierenhausen will have been at the school site to review bills, ask questions, and confirm information prior to the meeting. Recommendation is to approve the bill payment of $3,772,754.37 subject to any adjustments or direction offered by the Treasurer.

    3. TREASURER REPORT Treasurer Nierenhausen will have reviewed financial information for the board. This information is included in the Treasurer's Report.

    4. EMPLOYMENT Recommend approval of the assignment as outlined.

      1. ROCORI Middle School-Math teacher: Anna Panek starting the 2023-2024 school year.

      2. John Clark Elementary-Paraprofessional: Adeline Plath effective April 24th, 2023

      3. ROCORI Secondary -EL teacher moving to John Clark Elementary School-EL teacher: Britt O'Neal starting the 2023-2024 school year.

      4. ROCORI Secondary-Paraprofessional: Heather Wehlage effective April 25, 2023

      5. Cold Spring Elementary-Physical Education-DAPE teacher: Allyson Smith starting the 2023-2024 school year.

      6. ROCORI High School-Math Long term substitute teacher: Tyler Barker effective April 24, 2023 through June 2, 2023.

      7. District Education Facility-Childcare Assistant: Casey Ryan


  1. RETIREMENTS-RESIGNATIONS Recommend approval of the following resignations and/or retirements.

    1. Resignation-ROCORI Secondary-Paraprofessional: Michelle Sauer effective April 10, 2023

    2. Resignation-ROCORI Secondary Assistant Principal: Stephanie Ruegemer effective June 30, 2023

    3. Resignation-ROCORI High School-English teacher: Denee Kalkbrenner effective June 2, 2023

    4. Resignation-ROCORI Secondary-SPED teacher: Daniel Gieski effective June 2, 2023.

    5. Resignation-Cold Spring Elementary Principal: Keri Johnson Effective June 30, 2023


  1. MEDICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE REQUEST Recommendation: Approve the medical leave requests as presented.

    1. ROCORI High School-Spanish teacher: Kylie Stanfield requesting leave from August 28, 2023 through approximately October 22, 2023. An anticipated return date of October 23, 2023.

    2. ROCORI Middle School-6th grade teacher: Jennifer Mitchell requesting leave from March 22, 2023 through May 1st, 2023. An anticipated return date of May 2nd, 2023.

    3. ROCORI High School-Counselor: Shelly Collison requesting leave from August 28, 2023 through approximately November 17, 2023. An anticipated return date of November 20, 2023.

    4. Cold Spring Elementary-3rd grade teacher: Joyce Baumann requesting leave from May 8, 2023 through June 2, 2023.


  1. UNPAID CHILDCARE LEAVE REQUEST Recommendation approve the request as presented.

    1. Cold Spring Elementary-Kindergarten teacher: Emily Nibaur request unpaid childcare leave from May 22, 2023 through June 2, 2023.



  1. ACTION Action items receive individual attention because of the nature of the issues, the need to discuss or review the information prior to taking action, or the specific kind of action required for the item.

    1. APPROVAL OF PAYMENT TO COLD SPRING BAKERY Payment to Cold Spring Bakery Check #111242 in the amount of $26.97 Recommendation: Approve the Cold Spring Bakery Payment as presented.

    2. NONRENEWAL RESOLUTION The resolution included is for the nonrenewal of Tier 1 or Tier 2 teachers at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Recommend adoption of the resolution to terminate by non-renewal of these contracts.

    3. NONRENEWAL RESOLUTION The resolution included is for the nonrenewal of probationary teachers at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Recommend adoption of the resolution to terminate by non-renewal of this contract.

    4. IMPROVEMENT AND REDUCTION 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR The following information was discussed at the April 10, 2023 work session. Recommendation: Approve the information as presented.

    5. CURRICULUM PROPOSALS FOR 2023-2024 The curriculum proposal has been presented to the Teaching and Learning Committee held on April 24, 2023 Recommendation: Approve the curriculum proposals as presented.


  1. DISCUSSION ITEMS Discussion items receive individual attention because of the nature of the issues and the need for introductory or other discussion in order to review the information prior to taking action. This is also the agenda location for items which simply need school board review, but no formal action on the item is required. Discussion items will typically return to the agenda at a future point for more specific action.

    1. FIELD TRIP REQUEST The following field trip request is being presented for a Costa Rica trip for June 2024.

    2. POLICIES The following policies have been discussed in the policy committee. It is being presented for a first reading and call for public comment. No formal action is expected.

  1. POLICY The following policy has been submitted by school board member, Kayla Nierenhausen. It has not been brought forth through the policy committee, but separate discussion was requested by the policy committee board members.

  1. WINTER ACTIVITIES REPORT Director of Activities Baumgarten will be presenting an update on Winter Activities. No formal action is expected


  1. ADMINISTRATIVE AND BOARD REPORTS

    1. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT The Interim Superintendent will make his report about ROCORI Public Schools.

    2. BUDGET COMPARISON REPORT MARCH 2023 The business office provides an update of district expenditures and revenues through the Budget Comparison report. The report is intended to provide a financial picture of the district in a couple ways. One is to compare current year expenditures to the previous year. The second is to simply give a report on the current financial status. In addition to the report, special items of note are highlighted in the explanations offered. This report does not require formal action but is provided as an informational item.

    3. BOARD COMMITTEE AND REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS Board members will report on activities within their portfolio of committee and representative assignments.


  1. COMMENTS AND REQUESTS FROM VISITORS The agenda is open to visitors of the meeting to offer comments to and/or requests of the school board. The comments and requests should follow the adopted district guidelines which are printed and available at the meeting. As a general rule, items introduced in the opportunity for comments and requests do not receive action from the School Board, but are taken under advisement or consideration for future action.

  2. UPCOMING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES A calendar of upcoming issues of concern to the school board is included as part of the agenda.
